Yes, occasionally. They're a bit of a distraction, IMHO! It's a bit like your email subject line - whether to fill it in, or no. You can use as many or as few hashtags, anywhere in the tweet, as you want. However there appears to be a preference to put words or phrases in hashtags, if you must use them, towards or at the end of the tweet. They also take up tweet real-estate. Remember, though, that tweetts are often informal and also ephemeral - they being of merely passing interest. Best way however to know of such things as hashtags is to read/view tweets that use them.

Flor,

Sorry, but it's hashtags in a tweet that I would receive is what I refer to
but to whom I tweet well the hastag would be good to know.

Have you ever got a tweet wwith one or more of hashtags?/

Hi Tony,

Who's 'them'? If you know who they are, mention the unfortunates in your tweet by putting an 'at' sign before each Twitter user name, (either within the tweet itself or by using the 'mention all users' feature). Then, in time, they'll get it. Now, you can't force people to read or search for your tweet if they're not inclined to.

Ah Flor!

"Twitter police" but you want to know if your tweet of 140 characters sage
of wisdom reaches them, :) .

Okay you are given a BBC programme to tweet and they say BBCAQ
and use the hashtag Radio 4!

So #radio 4 is to put Radio 4 up there for hashtagging for folk searching.

So you tweet: BBCAQ and in your tweet type in #radio 4, am I correct.

Have more looking up to do of Twitter but can see now why it's really so
powerful either for fun, business and all of that and other.

Oh, a tweet I got recently:

@tony_sweeney My Twitter learning tutor says that folk on Twitter take
Twittter far too seriously, Smile.

Tony,

if they are on Twitter, then if they want to be contacted they should encourage use of RTEDriveTime or whatever their Twitter handle is, immediately preceded by the 'at' sign. The main purpose of using hashtags is to attract attention. In theQube You can also do a ctrl+win+slash search followed by the term or phrase, without using a hashtag. The Twitter police are not looking over your shoulder!

Perhaps it's more accurate to do a search with #2014 by hitting control win
and / or to find info of a book or whatever you want yourself.

Say you want to contact a radio station for example you would then use control win and n to create a new tweet and then type in say #rtedrivetime
for example and then your message.

Trust I got all that right now but if not please feel free to advise
otherwise.

Thank you so much Tony and Flor.

I'm checking out Qube and hope to be able to give a progressrreport over
time.

Thank you.

Going back in time am I instead of forwardd, :)

I intend learning more of Hashtags and perhaps may be in a position to post

my progress here soon.

Think that you can hashtag almost anything you like?

I learnt that you must first create a tweet before doing the #2014 for
example.

Perhaps we may see a mini-tutorial from Paul T or other on these matters.

Best for the year,

Hi Ayoola,

There's an updated version of Qwitter (mentioned by Tony in another
message) called TheQube - that's Qube (with a q). It's available from

www.quartzprojectsz.co.uk >,

and it enables you to follow friends and track them, as well as track your followers. it is a GUI-less app, and is operated by the Windows and ctrl keys in combination with arrow and cursor keys, and some times with
the shift and the alt key. You begin a new tweet in it with
ctrl+Windows+n, and type your 140-or-less characters. Then press ENTER to SEND. Retweeting and replying/mentioning are also provided for. There is also a friendly "Keystroke manager" - got by pressing ctrl+Win+k - which gives you a list of the keystrokes and describes their functions. TheQube is a computer Twitter client. The ReadMe file is good, being largely based on that of the now-moribund Qwitter client. What I like about Twitter is that you don't have to say any more than you want or
have to! And you can unfollow people you may decide aren't worth
following. 'People' can also mean organisations and/or groups.

many newspeople and journalists/reporters use Twitter.

Hello and happy new year all,

You might have become tired of facebook in the last 12 months if you are like me who takes time to craft what I consider a well-thought-out
post only not to get any comment and maybe one or two likes from a
friend list of about 700 facebook users.

I was discussing my frustration with a very close friend (both in real life and on facebook) and she suggested twitter as a better platform
for me to be heard and improve my reputation.

Now, the thing is, I’m not new to twitter; I’ve used the standard
twitter web site both on my PC and on my Symbian phone for about four
years. I’ve even used twitter through EasyChirp – easychirp.com and
easychirp.org – as well as Tweetcaster and Tweetings for Twitter –
both apps on android.

But then, I know there’s much more beyond composing 140-character
tweets. You must be able to and be ready to follow treads to your
tweets, reply publicly and sometimes privately, among other things.
How can a person who is totally blind be effective in all of these and even more required to be a success on twitter? I will be glad to know of your recommendations of ways to improve my understanding and use of twitter – including learning from web sites, books and other sources.

Thank you.
