Hi Flor if one wishes to practice gestures it is best to place the iPhone in
the landscape position on a flat surface and then they can practice gestures
and make sure that all fingers touch the screen this is the greatest problem
with starting off that one does not use all fingers evenly does instead of a
three finger tap it might only have a two finger tap

To get out of VoiceOver help Mode, either a two-finger scrub or ‘z’ gesture,
or pressing the Home button, will do it. (Or if you fancy it, four-finger
double-tap again!)

Help is an exception, in that it IS NOT an on/off toggle. (Many of the

Flor, it is a brilliant way to learn and you are correct, one does have to
read it leasurely, giving oneself time to take in the info. Also it isn’t a
bad idea to mimmick the actions described on a flat surface next to your
computer as you read in the event you don’t have a iphone in your
posession. It was the one and only real source of self tuition for the
iphone. Now, if you are of the frame of mind that you get into the idea
of the voiceover but there is a few described actions that you don’t quite
get at first, keep trying, leaving it and coming back to it again. I got my
phone December, 2 years ago and I didn’t quite get the index combo box in
the contacts but after the eureka moment I find it really great. Another
great assistive help point is if you place the iphone in the landscape
position and then perform a four finger double tap and voiceover will
announce help, this lets you perform all gestures without actually doing
anything while voiceover will tell you what each gesture results in – 3
finger swipe from right to left page forward. You can get out of this window
by repeating the gesture I mentioned earlier as it is an activate or
deactivate gesture. Roslyn, in the event you don’t have an opportunity to
use an iphone, you might have a look at an ipad or an ipod, voiceover works
the same on all devices. If you have a friend who has a I device or apple
ipad iphone or ipod, ask them to give you a look at it and if you try a 3
finger double tap on the screen it should switch on voice over and do the
same again to turn it off. If this doesn’t work ask them if they could go
into settings and switch on voiceover under accessibility. Susan, I don’t
know about the local library system in the north, alas Roslyn, you could
contact the local library and inquire if they have a volunteer who gives
tutorials on iphones or other such devices. Don’t make a big thing of
explaining to them that you are visually impaired, best to leave it out and
in the event that a local volunteer does show people all about smart
devices, find out when he is there and see if you can make an appointment to
meet him so that maybe he might show you something on his I device or smart
phone, In the event let me know how you get on with this option. You could
of course contact the local resource worker and ask the technology officer
to visit or talk to them inquiring about the opportunity of looking at an
iphone. Susan, if you want to try out something, get Joe to put the email
of a friend into contacts if the phone has access to the wifi in the house
or use joe’s phone. Then if siri is active on the phone, “Hey serie, make a
facetime video call to joe bourke” serie in her cool feministic tones wil
answer “making a facetime audio call to joe bourke” – oh! How those husky
breathie tones excite me….

Two-Finmger Scrub: That is, two-finger flick right then left, is the Back or
ESC button.
(Remember to turn the Screen Curtain OFF when/if you needd a sighted pair of
eyes to look at the screen! Three-Finger Triple-Tap.)
Be patient with yourself while learning the iPhone. (If you’d had enough for
one day or afternoon, come back to it later when you’re fresher.) It all
takes time to absorb anyway. (Perhaps a few weeks to get familiar with it,
depending on how much time you put into it.) It’s ultimately rewarding!

Roslyn: Honestly iPhones rarely come cheap, but there are generally plenty
of people selling them second hand on the likes of Adverts.ie and DoneDeal.ie
There are shops around the place called Entertainment Exchange, and their
website www.cex.ie but in my experience they are very expensive.
At this stage I wouldn’t recommend buying anything older than an iPhone 6,
maybe at a push an iPhone 5S or 5C, which are 4 years old now..
Susan: A good place to start is www.applevis.com
They have some good beginners guides. There is also a forum where you can
ask questions.
