Hi Cearbhall,
As Yogi Berra, the American who couldn’t help being funny with quotes, said,
“it isn’t over till it’s over!” We don’t know yet if Vincent’s apparent
Internet Explorer file download issues have been resolved. If it was merely a
security issue there, then your recommended fix worked.

Vincent,
I want to deal with a JAWS aspect here. You mentioned you have JAWS17. Have you
heard of JAWS’ OCR feature? It should have been installed with your JAWS 17
when you installed that. (This JAWS OCR enables reading of many image PDF’S,
plus other image documents.) Press INSERT+SPACE, then d (for Document), when in
the PDF in Reader DC. JAWS OCR then processes the image, and will tell yu when
it’s completed that. I’m not sure if JAWS17 will read the document in the
normal way, or if you need to switch to the JAWS cursor to do so.
(If your JAWS OCR did not install, you can still get it from the
freedomscientific.com Website.)
For the iTunes thing: you need to change the file association so that Acrobat
Reader DC will henceforth automatically open PDF’s when you press enter on
them. If Cearbhall or somebody doesn’t come back or beat me to it, I’ll return
later (if I find something on it, or something that’ll do it from the menus).
If you have JAWS OCR, again with Insert+Space to first activate, then press h
to get the various commands. (These are what is known as ‘layered keystrokes’.)

hi cearbhall and flor
i now have it working after these instructions, but i already did this at the
very start after getting these instructions from Google. i think it was a
joint fix from both flors original instructions and doing your instructions
again a second time.
now i am still having some problems though. having these files saved in my
documents when i go into open them i press enter on them they are opening in
iTunes as an audio file which is doing nothing for me.
so then i close this and right click on it and go to open with...
adobe dc and it opens perfect. no problems.
except for the fact that the original document that all this started with is
not readable with my jaws screen reader. i had a sighted person look at it and
it is visible to them just not to a screen reader.
now the other documents that i was able to read in the past are now fully
accessible to me now. just not this new one that im trying to access now.
can i send it to you and see if you can read it with your computer.
p.s my iPhone voice over is not reading it out either.
and on the iPhone it is fully visible to sighted person.
maybe its a result of the way/format it was sent to me?
also do you know of any reason why i click on it to open in a normal way why it
is opening itunes?
many thanks from a very grateful
Vincent.

Hi Vincent,
In another message, you said, “... do not allow this document to be opened.” In
the message below, you say, “... do not allow this document to be
*downloaded*”. Which is it, opened, or downloaded? In other words, it could be
your Adobe Reader, or your Web browser, that’s causing the issue.
Assuming from what you have said that it’s more likely an Adobe Reader issue:
Please verify that you have unchecked Protect documents at Startup, in the
Security Enhanced settings in Preferences. (Is your screenreader reporting the
status of checkboxes correctly? If JAWS, press NumPad INSERT + UPARROW on a
checkbox to verify its state.)
You could look at the Adobe forum discussion, where someone had a problem
similar to yours, at:
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1955530
Cearbhall has also provided useful checks.

hi flor
i did all what you said on your message and still nothing.
when i try open a pdf document from my documents it still gives me the same
message.
your current security setting do not allow this document to be downloaded.
now if i have adobe dc opened and go to file menu and down to the recently
opened documents it
shows the documents that i was trying to open when i try open the document
from here it opens and tells me that its a blank document which i know its not.
i had this happen with other documents before and opened them in some way that
allowed me to read the text. but for the life of me i cant remember how i did
it.
any other suggestions more than welcome and many thanks.

Hi Vincent,
If you’re talking about opening PDF’s on a computer using acrobat Reader DC,
here’s a somewhat comprehensive set of instructions some of which may bear
directly on your problem. It’s been a good while since I have had to make any
of the changes treated with.
Try the following cchanges below to see if
they help with performance.
Note that there are links with the Security Enhanced section to explain the
consequences of
unchecking items there, and you may want to find out what they have to say.
1. Open Adobe Reader DC from your desktop or start menu icons, go into
preferences with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view.
If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened. Arrow
down to Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below "Security."
Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to uncheck
but, optional:
Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked.
Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked.
Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told
that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other
changes first.
2. Launch the Edit menu, Alt + E, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu
and open
it. Scroll down to the Set-up Assistant and press enter. The Set-Up
Assistant has five screens, but the only change you have to make is on the
last, screen 5 of 5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on "Next"
in each instance, until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here, tab to
the check box labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser" and make
sure it
is unchecked. It may be checked by default. Then tab to the Okay button, &
press enter. You can now close the program & give it a try on a PDF file.
