1. if you just hold down and release quickly the power button, you
will lock the screen. to get out of that just do the press and release
quickly again. then you will be on the opening screen.
here you swipe to the right until you get to unlock. double tap and
you are on the home screen.
2. powering down? just hold that power button a little longer before
you release, then swipe and you will find two options, ok and cancel.
double tap and you are done.
no need really to mouse around with your finger. that's the skinny!

to skin a cat!

hear something, yes?) When you hear "cancel" move your finger a little to
the right, and you should hear "OK" then double tap, and it will power
down
like a good little Fire. Learned that one the hard way, LOL!
