It's to bad that someone doesn't create a a audio tutorial from unboxing and using the Fire.

Okay Rick,

No, it makes the sound every time you press a volume button. Also no,
it's not just charging when you connect it to a computer you can then
copy and paste back and forth between the tablet and the computer
depending on the settings.

Try these steps.

1. Reset the tablet by holding down both the volume down and power
button for ten seconds.
2. Turn the tablet on and leave it alone for about 45 seconds so it
can turn on completely.
3. hold down the power button for a few seconds until it makes a sound.
4. Hold down the power button again for a couple of seconds so it
makes the sound again.
5. At this point put two fingertips on the screen about half an inch
apart until it says that VoiceView has been turned on, it shouldn't
take more than 10 seconds.

I give up for today!  I tried as described and no speech just lower tones
when the power button is pressed, my 2 fingers on the middle of the keyboard
less than a second after the button is pressed with no response, I leave the
fingers there for at least 30 seconds.  I do want to make sure that the
volume is increased by pressing down the right side of the volume button
then a tone is heard when the maximum level is reached, is that correct.

I plugged the Fire into my computer and a connection sound came
from the Fire, I think it is  normal for the computer not to recognize the
Fire as it is only a charging device to it, is that correct?

I think the sound is incorrect when the power button is pressed as it
is not the nice chime sound I heard the first time.

       Thanks for all help,

        Rick, snowbound in central NC

No tapping. Make sure the volume is turned up. With the tablet turned on
hold down the power button until you hear the sound which shouldn't take
longer than a second or two. Place two fingertips on the middle of the
screen and wait a few seconds, the voice will come up and say something like
continue to hold down two fingers etc, after a few more seconds VoiceView
will be turned on.

Hello again,

Still can't get the Fire to talk,  I did as suggested but no
dice, I've tapped twice and also have  held my two fingers on the
screen for over
30 seconds and no response.  I do not get the pleseant chime tone when
I hold down the power button for 5 seconds but get a unpleasant lower
clunky tone.  I think it wants me to respond to a question I cannot
see or now hear.  Any suggestions will be appreciated and tried!

hi. this might be a little easier. when the fire is on the home screen
and you want to power off?

1. if you just hold down and release quickly the power button, you
will lock the screen. to get out of that just do the press and release
quickly again.
then you will be on the opening screen.

here you swipe to the right until you get to unlock. double tap and
you are on the home screen.

2. powering down? just hold that power button a little longer before
you release, then swipe and you will find two options, ok and cancel.
double tap and you are done.

no need really to mouse around with your finger. that's the skinny!

unless you really want to /smile. 'cause, there are more than one way
to skin a cat!

stay well ... william

Oh, I can help with part of this!  I had the same problem, Rick.
When you go to power down, and the Fire selects "cancel" find that
button with explore (I think where you just slide your finger along
the screen until you hear something, yes?) When you hear "cancel"
move your finger a little to the right, and you should hear "OK"
then double tap, and it will power down like a good little Fire.
Learned that one the hard way, LOL!
