Thanks, Carol, for providing information to allow me to recognize this gesture.
I knew that Voice View wasn't shut off, no matter what those Amazon guys said.
Additionally, I kept tapping in differing combinations, and speech finally came
back without Amazon assistance. So, now I can recognize the appropriate
gesture, should this situation occur.
Thanks a bunch!

Hi,
If you did not get your answer to muting speech, you do a three-finger
double-tap. This is a toggle, so you do the same three-finger
double-tap to turn speech back on. Put your three fingers slightly
apart, but make sure they all touch the screen at the same time.

Yes, William, I meant the voice on the screen reader, which I vaguely heard
say "speech off" when I inadvertently did what I did to shut it off.
The folks from the Philippines don't know how to help much. Folks from South
Africa are a bit better, perhaps because they have more native English
skills, and their call center environment appears to be quieter.
I actually set up my Echo Dot three times. Now I finally have it in a good
place. It doesn't like being near several other devices, which was my first
choice because my bed has a bookshelf head board. Now it is on a real
bookshelf, so it lives far more happily. Its wireless stability appears
greater than my Victor Stream, as the Dot holds a radio station all night
long and doesn't cut out.
I got the Dot as a Christmas gift from my sons, along with several smart
plugs/switches. Since we couldn't think of anything to do with them but turn
on/off lights, I gave them back to my son. I use to buy him toys I would like
to play with, now he is getting me back with this smart house stuff.
Thanks, William, for the direct link to the dongle. I didn't want to spend
nearly as much on the keyboard as I did on the tablet. I'm basically cheap,
and who doesn't have an extra USB keyboard laying around for use with a
laptop or something else. Also, I want instant availability without the
chance of a mispairing, etc. I tend to use a wired connection with bluetooth
speakers, so I'm a luddite about these things.
Thanks for all your assistance to everyone! What would we do without a smart
person on the list?

Hi Rhonda.
1. A $6 dongle cable will allow you to connect your full-size usb
keyboard to your Fire tablet. You'll find it on Amazon. Try this link:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D8YZ2SA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
2. To get Alexa to respond, double tap and hold the home button at the
bottom of the screen. Release when you hear the chime and give your
command. Try saying, Sing A Song. You don't need to say Alexa. You
will find the home button at the bottom. From the right to left there
is app switcher, home and back. The Alexa app shortcut on the home
screen is mostly used to set-up Alexa skills. Another way to get Alexa
to chime is to do a two-finger double tap and hold on the home screen
and release and give your command when you hear the chime.
3. When you say mute, do you mean the voice from the screenreader?
Stay well ... William

Hello, Listers,
What is the cheapest way to put a keyboard on the Fire #8 tablet? I thought
somewhere on this list I read about something one could purchase from Amazon
to enable an ordinary USB input keyboard to work. If so, lease tell me what
it is.
Is it possible to mute a Fire tablet without turning off VoiceView. I was
arguing this point with a tech troubleshooter last night. I accidentally
double tapped in the wrong place, or two many times, and my speech went
away. I finally fixed it with no help from the tech folks, who really don't
understand that one does not constantly have someone with vision available.
Also, my Alexa app is listed on the home screen. However, the double tap
hold with two fingers doesn't elicit any noise that I can hear. I know the
Alexa works because, when too close to my Echo Dot, it chimes in as well.
I brailled out a very nice Fire TV stick manual, alnd I'm hoping tpo do the
same for VoiceView instructions for the tablet. Thank you, william, because
the first place I am going to look is your blog.
Cheers! Sorry for unnecessarily cluttering this list!
