Bob Harris and I were in a canoe doing Prothonotary nest box surveys at Dutch Gap and were happy to run in to Ben and Betsy. We had Prothonotary males singing a t a good majority of the nest boxes. Many Carolina Chickadee's have taken up residence in the Prothonotary boxes with 38 eggs we counted and 48 nestlings out of 100 boxes. A few Tree Swallows are trying to stake a claim as well but no completed nests. To add to your list we had a good look at a flyover Anhinga, 2 vocalizing Barred Owls, Mallards and Blue-grey Gnatcatchers. The number of Osprey and Eagles were really exciting. We also got a great look at a Caspian Tern diving with success for fish. Several deer were bounding through the marsh vegetation and we saw a Woodchuck along the shore. We had looks at a singing Prothonotary, a Kingbird in the marsh and an Eagle in hot pursuit of an Osprey carrying a fish. From the first platform we watched a female Wood Duck shepherd 6 fluffy babies along the edge of the marsh. Caspian Terns were flying over the river and Osprey were in abundance.
