VA-Birders,
Pleasant temperatures with an overcast sky and a steady breeze from the South
led to fine birding this morning. A young eagle was seen standing on the nest
about midway between Fox and Easy Roads on Deephole Point Road. The nest is
high and recessed from Deephole from near the remnants of a duck blind, and the
eagle seems to be ready to fledge very soon. Osprey were numerous, and from the
mouth of Catamount Creek I saw a Least Bittern fly briefly just above the marsh
and be chased by a Red-winged Blackbird. The Yellow-breasted Chat was vocal and
visible from the parking area, while the Prairie Warbler was only heard. The
Prothonotary Warbler was well seen near the creek on Delta Road. Common
Yellowthroat and Indigo Bunting were numerous in their typical habitat. The
biggest thrill wasn't a bird, but my first observation here of a River Otter at
the 1st creek East of Fox Road on Deephole Pt. Rd.!
