The Huntley Meadows Monday Morning Birdwalk gathered 21 birders today in
warm, humid conditions with occasional light rain. Our highlights this
morning included a very visible Red-winged Blackbird nest in a button bush
located only 6 feet off the boardwalk. Two growing chicks impatiently
demanded even more food as the mother brought them many caterpillars. The
Hooded Merganser kids are getting bigger, and are more closely resembling
their mother. And finally, a large collection of Eastern Kingbirds seemed
to join the Swallows in hawking insects out of the air. The day was
made perfect as a lilting Wood Thrush song echoed through the forest.

The Monday Morning Birdwalk has been a weekly event at Huntley Meadows since
1985. It takes place every week, rain or shine, at 7AM (8AM from November
through March), is free of charge, requires no reservation, and is open to
all. Birders meet in the parking lot at the Park's entrance at 3701 Lockheed
Blvd, Alexandria, VA. Questions should be directed to Park staff during
normal business hours at (703)768-2525.
