"Some Good" Evelyn Hale, Joseph Swiftwind S'Ghaladriel, Moria McEntire-McKenna She was by no means as good a cook as her sister or grandmothers, but Moria managed a descent meal from time to time. She'd only had half an hour to put something on after Joseph had left her office so she settled for something simple and easy. Spaghetti, salad, cheesy garlic bread, and red wine. After putting everything on to cook in her tiny kitchenette, Moria slipped into her bedroom so she could wash up and ditch her uniform. Evy's mind and heart just weren't in it. She'd dragged on a pair of faded jeans and a loose white cotton shirt with her leather cowboy boots to finish. They'd been a kind of a joke from her brother Steven because he'd said that out of all of them, she'd become the Lone Ranger. When she reached Mo's door, she didn't bother knocking or anything but just let herself in. "Hey, hun, you here?" Damn, she thought, something smells good. Being around Evy was like being around one of her sisters, so Moria didn't hastate to step out of her bedroom barefoot, with only her loose flowing skirt on and her shirt in her hands. "Right here." She replied with a smile as she slipped her arms into her soft cotton button up blouse. As she made her way over to give Evy a hug, the top the tattoo on her hip could be seen. "So why the sudden need to have dinner with me?" Evy said once she let Moria go. "Not that I don't love seeing ya, but it's been a while since we had a girls' night in just the two of us." Moria's face flushed as she frowned. "I'm sorry about that, Evy. I should have done this a lot sooner." Buttoning her shirt as she moved over to the couch she waited until Evy was sitting with her before she smiled sheepishly. "This is going to make my not having you over more so much worse, but I did have a reason for asking you over tonight." "Yeah?" Evy grinned evilly. "You got someone needs smooshing?" "Smooshing no, smooching hopefully." Moria teased. "First, let me ask you a question. Have I ever told you about this?" She pulled her shirt up and the band of her skirt down to show off the tattoo that Joseph had done. It was a hummingbird resting on a long swirl of stars and small flower petals. "No, I don't think I've ever seen it." Reaching out her fingers, she brushed them lightly over the picture. "It's a classy piece. Whoever did it must have been a real artist." Moria beamed. "He is, he gets it from his Ri'nanov. I met him when I was in college, he was kin to my friend Noah and he introduced me to Sam. I had to do a lot of growing up and self searching before Hawk would do this. It hurt like hell but because it has meaning it was worth the pain of getting it and the pain of having my mother find out about it." Moria laughed at the memory of her mother's reaction, though at the time it was far from funny. "She nearly killed poor Joseph." "Hawk did that?" Evelyn's cheeks flooded bright scarlet but she couldn't take her eyes off the design. It was so intricate and so perfectly Moria. Somehow, Evy had known he'd done it, even without being told; there was something of the man in that little bird. "He's good," she whispered with awe. "He's my guiding Hawk, Evy, as close to a brother as you are a sister." Moria told her openly. "And he's in love with you." "He's what?!" Pulling in great gulps of air, Evy sat back and stared at Moria. "I barely know him, he barely knows me, we barely know each other. How can he love me? He must be either blind, deaf or stupid, though probably a combination of all three." She hugged herself tightly, not liking the cold fear that had set in. "I ain't worth loving like that." "You stop right there Evelyn Rosemary Hale!" Moria scolded gently. "First off, Hawk isn't any of those things. He's a sweet passionate man who knows in his soul that he's falling in love with an amazing woman. He's Rihannsu, Evy, and when they meet their sahe, their beloveds, it's a deep and sudden feeling. Sam use to tell me he knew the moment she saw me on the beach before he even knew my name that I was to be his e'lev." Turning her cousin's chin so that Evy would look at her, Moria added. "Secondly, don't you ever let me hear you say that your not worth loving, do you hear me young lady? Your very much worth loving, and very much worthy of his." "I've never had someone love me like that before," Evy admitted. "It's not something I want or look for. He's a friend, Mo. I like him an awful lot, I respect him, he's interesting and funny and a bit loopy. He's got this kinda deep rooted wisdom that sounds like something some old holy man would say. And when he looks at you... it's like they see into your soul and you can't hide who you are from him even if you wanted to." Sighing as she held Moria's eyes, she said, "He goes the most beautiful colour when he blushes too." Moria couldn't help but smile. "What was the first thing you thought of when I asked you to dinner?" A mischievous smile spread over Evy's face. "Yay free food?" "Did you know that the very corner of your eyes crinkle when you lie?" Moria asked still grinning. "Try again Sweetpea." Huffing out her breath, Evy scowled at Mo. "Okay, okay, I admit it, I thought 'oh dear lord, no, please not Moria!'" Then she laughed and shook her head. "Kidding. I thought damn coz I'd wanted to have dinner with Hawk tonight. And I was kinda worried I'd offend him if I didn't show." "Ya know, I do recall Miranda telling me I could smack you around if I wanted." Moria teased before her eyes softened to almost a light grey. "And now every time you walk into the mess you look for him, and you find yourself thinking about him at odd moments, and you worry about how he feels... Wanna tell me again your just friends? Or better yet, that you only want to be friends." "I, err, just wanna be friends?" Evy frowned as she curled her legs underneath her. "I don't know what I want. Except..." "Except what?" Moria asked as she reached out and brushed hair from the younger woman's face. "Except him," Evy whispered with a tiny smile and a light rose touching her cheeks. "I don't just think of him at odd moments, I think of him all the time. It helps that he's gorgeous, ya know." Moria laughed. "Oh yeah I've noticed. Between the Cheyenne features and the Rihannsu the boy won out in the you can't go wrong with these genetics betting pool." "And he's in love with me?" Evy said carefully. "Very much so, Sweetpea." Moria smiled and brushed at Evy's cheek. "And I'm pretty sure it's a John and Lindsey, Mac and Anna, Darius and Joanna kinda thing." "But what if I don't love him? I've never been in love before, how can I be sure?" How had she been sure about Sam? About Joe? Pointing at Evy's heart Moria finally replied. "It's in there. The problem is getting it up here." She tapped her cousin's head. "Ask yourself if you can honestly be without him even if you had to settle to have him only as a friend. You find yourself thinking it would be easier to go without air. If the answer is yes, then I'm gonna guess your in love with him too." Instead of replying, Evy asked, "Did he put you up to this?" "No." Moria answered. "He's scared to death of talk to you because he's afraid of getting hurt. This was my idea." Evy felt like all the air had been sucked out of her body. "Hurt him? Fuck, I think I'd rather take on a horde of angry Klingons, storm a castle bristling with heavily armed Jem'Hadar," then she added quietly, "die." "Wanna tell me again Sweetpea how you don't know if you love him or not?" Moria asked gently as she rubbed circles on Evy's back the way her Mum rubs hers. "Feeling smug, ain't ya," Evy teased even though her heart wasn't in it. "Not that you don't have a right to. Between you, your sisters, my sisters and both our mothers, I've had people tell me to get myself a man since I left home. And now I appear to have one, I don't even know what I'm s'posed to do with him." Blushing brightly, she said, "Except the obvious. That I know how to do." "Not smug, Evy, but I'm glad your finally gonna have a chance to have something wonderful." Moria smiled brightly for her cousin, but there was a little sadness in her eyes. "I've been amazingly lucky in my life. I was gifted with having two men that I've loved with all my heart, soul, and body. All we've ever wanted for you was that, Evy." "Fuck," Evy muttered. "I think I do too." Meeting Moria's eyes, she said softly, "I don't know how I'm even gonna be able to look at him now." She took her cousin's hand and squeezed it tightly. "Will you be there? Kinda like a buffer in case I say something incredibly dumb or insulting and scare him away." Moria smiled. "Want me to call and ask him to come over? I've made more then enough food." Evy nodded shyly. "Please." Getting up off the couch, Moria walked over to the comm unit and pressed the button. "McKenna to S'Ghaladriel, Hawk could you come to my place please. Thanks. McKenna out." Evy sat in silence until the chime rang and she jumped. Wide eyes flicked to Moria. "Maybe I should hide or something." Moria laughed. "What are you five again? I'm not hiding your under my bed like I did when you broke your Mum's jewelry box." Plopping back onto the couch next to Evy she called out. "Come on in, Hawk." Two steps in and Joseph froze. "Err... sorry, didn't know you had company." Turning green, he span around and started out. Evy closed her eyes tight shut and said, "Don't you wanna stay?" That stopped him and he moved over to the couch. "Sure I do, I just thought Hummingbird'd be alone." "Ok you two here's the deal." Moria said with a smirk. "Hawk, you have feelings for Evy. Evy you have feelings for Hawk... Now... Do something about having those feelings together." "Thanks Mo," Evy groaned. "Couldn't'a put it better..." Her words died in her throat when she felt a pair of hands on her face. Opening her eyes, she found herself staring into the darkest browns she'd ever known. Joseph brought his lips slowly to hers, brushing against her as he leaned into the kiss. "I love you," he breathed against her mouth then kissed her again. It felt as if the whole universe narrowed down to just his lips on hers. Closing her eyes, she curled her arms around his neck and drew him closer. Hell yeah, she thought. As she drew back, a tiny smile lit her face. "I think... I know I love you." Slipping off the couch Moria headed for the kitchen to give Evy and Joseph some time alone. She smiled brightly as she sighed. Man are there going to be some really happy mothers when we get back. Andy and Vix and now Hawk and Evy. At least some good has come out of this mess.
