Which version of alsa-lib do you have?
alsa-lib-1.0.9-x86_64 
It's certainly not an issue of CPU usage.

For example, the problem with ALSA's dmix plugin is the large buffers it uses, which add a lot of latency to the audio pipeline. 
Ok. Is there a way to modify this buffer?
