Same as Zwiebelfreunde e.V. one of our clubs the main purposes is to
have a legal entity to run Tor exits. Another, probably even more
important reason, we founded our non profit, is to educate about Tor.
We are much smaller than other groups in this field, but still would
like to take part of the load.
In the last years we, the second of threen board members, Gero and I,
have been in contact with Moritz and Juris a few times. I'd say it was
loose informal contact on the CCC congress in Leipzig and Hamburg.
We always wanted to support torservers.net and Zwiebelfreunde e.V. in
an effort to increase diversity of the Tor ecosystem and asked to
take over some to the work/servers/bandwidth or similar. Sadly this
never happened, which for sure isn't to blame on anyone but us for
not keeping nagging.
Now, almost a year later, we would like to steer towards a meeting of
interested people and groups. We want to use this meeting to discuss,
define and decide how to proceed with torservers.net as I hope it
would be in Moritz interest.
There will be some preparation needed and some more discussions will
take place in the time before the meeting.
As I discussed with qbi at 36c3 in Leipzig in December 2019, and with
Brabo at FOSDEM 2020, with Juga at both events with numerous other
people (Christ and others) in the last months we should all together
find out what to do with torservers.net.
As Moritz asked in May 2019, which we all read, questioning the future
of torservers.net.
I want to make sure, even so it could be understood so, that I do not
follow my own ambitions, but I would like to support the cause of
Tor(servers.net).
I followed the whole process for some years now. I mostly sat in the
background and watched what would happen, I was new and didn't want to
get into it too much. Now I wanna take part in the process and would
like to offer my help in organizing a first meeting. A first meeting,
somewhere in/between Kassel and Frankfurt a.M.. The idea was a
city/town easy to reach by train from
Thüringen/Berlin/Hamburg/Cologne, so I am still open for any personal
suggestions from anyone who would like to join the meeting.
At FOSDEM we discussed, that we would like to prepare the meeting for
late April or May 2020, I think we will have to find a date in the
smaller group of those interested to make sure the most important
participants can be at the meeting (not counting me as important
there). Juga reminded me that there is also the Onionspace in Berlin
which could house this meeting, but maybe there is some other place
too (ideas??). I know a Youth Hostel (Jugendherberge) in Kassel that
would offer meeting rooms and at the same time it would be easy to
find a place to stay.
To summarize this long email, I want to help to organize a meeting for
torservers.net to figure out the future and how to proceed with it.
The idea now is to get some input from all of you!
So please write if you think the meeting is a good idea, give me a +1
at least (!!) or make suggestions what to do instead or what to
discuss beforehand.
As a possibility I would also like to mention that there could be a
Zwiebelfreunde Member meeting at the same time, as I understand they
have to have a meeting because their statue requires it, there was a
failed meeting already (quorum problem). qbi seemed to agree that
there is a possibility to combine both events, so let's at least keep
this in mind.
This is the first step to prepare a meeting.
