Yes. There are plenty of Germans/Benelux interested, hence the Germany
focus.
I guess the city/town/village/* of the meeting depends on the number of local
people/residents willing to attend or organize the meeting. For people that
cannot travel (for whatever reason) remote participation could be an option if
people are OK with the idea.
I have never seen this work with a decent number of people and low
effort organization. Furthermore the idea is that a small group pushes
forward and gets stuff done. While remote participation gets a lot of
issues if the discipline is lacking and no experience in hybrid meetings
is with most participants.
So, I would suggest to NOT allow remote. Given this is a rather hot
topic of what gets pushed how and by whom next months. Being primarily
in a face to face meeting without much other congress/fosdem/con stuff
happening around you. Get in, focus, work, socialize, build up local
trust. Maybe even w/o internet.
The cities were picked because easily reachable by train from all areas
from Germany, especially from west/south/north and Thüringen. (Axis
dortmund/Hannover Berlin) /(Hamburg Hannover Stuttgart Munich), (Leipzig
Jena Frankfurt)
This is NOT the only meeting, we hope to get more together following
months and maybe we manage to get remote participation in easily, as
well as putting stuff on the agenda by remote folks. But for now face to
face, getting to know each other, starting to build is the priority. But
I would not count on us to manage to get remote in as a first citizen.
We are Happy to take all suggestions tho, but always remember that it
has to be possible to be run in a noisy place, with EDGE connectivity
(yes we are in Germany) and next to no budget.
Also the core team that is supposed to bootstrap now is needed to be
small. If stuff needs to work for a longer time, face to face meetings
need to happen more often, so having one face to face meeting per year
at congress might not be sufficient.
Nevertheless, we try to identify work packages that everyone can work on
and need to make sure all the stuff gets presented to the broader scope
and people not able to attend. It is now just too much to facilitate remote.
