While working at 8:00 this morning, I was passed by a tightly bunched swarm of Sachems. They all headed for a patch of grass so I watched them for a few seconds. I couldn't get an exact count but I'm pretty sure it was at least 10 males all after 1 female. Somehow she was able to choose a winner and the happy couple split from the group and started working on the next generation (nudge nudge). A few days ago I setup my camera on a tripod aimed at 1 Zinnia and there was a constant stream of Skippers with sometimes as many as 4 at a time on the same flower. Sachems are #1 but there has been a surprisingly large number of Little Glassywings. Clouded Skippers are #3 and Fiery Skippers are #4. The Sachems can be found on just about anything. The Glassywings prefer the Zinnias and Lantana. Fierys prefer the Lantana and the Cloudeds are mostly on Petunias. It is amazing how they appear in such numbers...
