Hello Fellow Butterfliers,
This Saturday the 28th will be the fall seasonal count at Clifton Bend. We
will meet at 9:30 AM at the parking area of Carroll Cabin Barrens State Natural
Area on Smith Gravel Pit Rd. Please remember the $3.00 NABA fee. We will try
to get to our count areas as soon as possible as this count can have LOTS of
butterflies and prove slow to move through a spot, so please be on time if
possible. In the past several years we have had more than 50 species and
upwards of 2000 individuals. Notable sightings recently include 19 Longtailed
Skippers last year, a Southern Dogface, Giant Swallowtails, big numbers of
Cloudless Sulphurs, Little Yellows, Sleepy Oranges, Lace-winged
Roadside-Skippers, and Red-banded Hairstreaks. Still looking for that Great
Purple Hairstreak to make an appearance!
Unfortunately, Meo Mio's Restaurant is only open for dinner, so please bring
your lunch to eat in the field. The weather forecast looks great, mostly sunny
with a high around 90. And just a reminder, this count is notorious for the
amount of ticks it has, so bring the bug spray! This is a seasonal count, so
we are required to have 4 observers. I don't think that will be an issue, but
please let me know if you are planning to be there. Can't wait for a great day
in the field!
