Sandhill Cranes are eaten by hunters. A couple of Whooping Cranes were shot
in Kansas. I believe it was just last year. There was some discussion of
changing the dates for hunting Sandhill Cranes in Kansas to a later date in
order to allow the migration of Whooping Cranes to be complete before the
SACR hunting begins. That would supposedly prevent mistaking and killing
Whooping Cranes in low light conditions. I don't know if this change was
enacted or not.
