Baker Sanctuary 21145 15 Mile Road Bellevue, Michigan Eaton County On Sunday, 10/11/2009, my wife and I had the opportunity to attend CraneFest 2009 near Bellevue, Michigan, while travelling on business. This weekend was the 15th annual crane festival at the Baker Sanctuary near Bellevue, one of the first Sandhill crane sanctuaries established in the US in 1941. We arrived at 11 AM and were able to observe a dozen cranes, some of which were flying and some on the ground feeding near a small lake in the middle of the 900 acre sanctuary. We were told by other observers that several hundred cranes are currently using the preserve. The cranes stop over at the Baker Sanctuary in October as they begin their migration south. The weather was perfect at 40 degrees and crystal clear. It was great to see and hear the Sandhills on the northern end of their migration on their way to Hiawassee Wildlife Refuge and other points south.
