Oct. 11, 2009 Mississippi RV -Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co. TN The morning trip to the river produced 1 Coot and 1 Pied-billed Grebe floating down the river and 42 DC Cormorants. Lots of Rough-winged Swallows with a few Trees in the mix and just a couple of Chimney Swifts. Along Riverport Road, 10 Gadwall had used the weather express and at TVA Lake, 4 new Pied-billed and 9 Coots had also come in over night. The 3 DC Cormorants resting watched 72 of their brothers strung out heading south. At Ensley, I found where the Tree Swallows were hiding, a few hundred far out numbered the Rough-wings 10 to 1 and there was one lone immature Barn Swallow. Shifting through the thousands of Least Sandpipers and the weeds is hard work ;o), but a few new birds were found; Killdeer numbers were down, 3 Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 immature Greater ( they called and called and finally head south), a single Stilt Sandpiper, 1 Spotted and 4 spiffy immature Pectoral Sandpipers plus 2 basic plumaged Western Sandpipers. The numbers of Shovelers has doubled this week and 7 Blue-winged Teal are staying in one of the back mud holes. Watching for hawks over President's Island produced a large dark, immature Peregrine that appeared to have jesses or something caught on its feet, 2 pair of adult Bald Eagles, 1 pair resident and another sailing very high and drifting south, 3 Red-shouldered and a few Red-tails. A Merlin did his thing making a detour to trouble the Peregrine and then bee lining it south. Back at the river front, after sitting for 30 minutes, the parade started just after noon with a total of 1312 individuals counted in 7 groups in an hour. Probably some of the birds counted in Dyer and Lake Counties Saturday. Talking about a species coming back....................in numbers!! Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
