The Knoxville Chapter of TOS held the Knoxville CBC on Saturday, 2
January 2016. 49 observers in 25 parties identified 98 species within the
count circle which is centered in west Knoxville (Kingston Pike and
Ebeneezer) and includes parts of Knox, Blount, and Anderson Counties.
Both participation and total species are on par with the recent 10-year
average for this count.
A huge 'Thank you' to all that participated this year, and in years past.
Full results are included below. A few highlights and notes (see also
my previous post to TN-Birds with preliminary results)...
- Despite overall low numbers of waterfowl, we did squeeze out 11 species
including Redhead, Green-winged Teal, and Ruddy Duck. Misses include Am
Wigeon, Am Black Duck, N Pintail, both scaup, and C Goldeneye.
- Five warbler species (a new record) including Orange-crowned (2 which is
a new record high count, 3rd consecutive year and 8th time in 2000s) and
Yellow-throated with yellow lores (2nd time on this count, staked-out
bird, photos) along with the regular "Myrtle", Pine, and Palm.
- New high counts for Red-shoudered Hawk, Am Woodcock, Bonaparte's Gull,
Brown-headed Nuthatch, Orange-crowned Warbler
- Other notable finds: Osprey, Merlin, Red-headed WP, Fish Crow,
Red-breasted Nuthatch, Horned Lark, Pine Siskin, Purple Finch
- Other misses include: C Loon, N Harrier, Rufous Hummingbird, Loggerhead
Shrike (3rd consecutive miss), House Wren
Also note that a previously reported Sora is being omitted from the count
as concern has arisen that the observer was actually hearing tape playback
by another party.
Thanks again to everyone that made this a successful count!
