A great big thanks to everyone that participated on the Knoxville CBC back in January. It was a record setting count. Report below. The Knoxville CBC was held on Saturday, 4 Jan 2014. 50 observers in 27 parties found 105 species which is a new record for this count (previous was 102). The highlight of the count was 20 species of waterfowl and a massive number of gulls which signaled the begining of this winter's invasion due to record ice coverage on the Great Lakes. Surf Scoter is a new species for the historic record of this count which dates back to 1902. Record high counts were set for several ducks and gulls. Number of participants (50) is 3rd highest, and low temperature (15 F) ties for 3rd lowest on this count. Uncommon species: Surf Scoter (1st), Peregrine Falcon (2nd), White-winged Scoter (3rd), N Bobwhite (4th record in last 20 years), Orange-crowned Warbler (7th) Record high counts: N Shoveler, Redhead, Lesser Scaup, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Rufous Hummingbird (tie), Eastern Phoebe, Orange-crowned Warbler (tie) Big misses: Barred Owl (3rd miss in last 4 years), American Woodcock, Loggerhead Shrike, Fish Crow, and Long-tailed Duck (which was found just after count-week). Full results below. Please excuse the old taxonomy. I have given up on keeping my compilation spreadsheet up-to-date with the yearly AOU changes, at least until they finish reorganizing all the families.
