Yesterday, we decided to get out and see the cranes at Hiwassee Refuge. There
were PLENTY to see in every direction. We were also treated to an adult Bald
Eagle perched in a tree across the water. While watching from the platform, the
resident male Yellow Bellied Sapsucker put in appearance on a nearby Oak tree.
You just don't know what to look at next, there is so much to see up there!

On our way out, we watched two Red-Shouldered Hawks looking for dinner in the
corn field near the entrance. The male caught a small gray mouse or vole and
"skinned" it to give as a gift to the female. She seemed pretty impressed with
him and let him perch on the power line just inches from her as she ate her
treat. I wonder if this could be the same pair that I watched almost four years
ago in the same field. I would like to think that it is.

We also saw the Shrike on the power line right at the entrance at Hwy. 60 as we
were leaving.

Considering the rain, it was a good day to see some really great birds!
