In response to several postings asking about cranes at Hiwassee, as of this weekend there were about 1,000 cranes at the Hiwassee viewing area. There are 4,000-5,000 cranes in the entire area, most being up at the Armstrong Bend area, and also decent numbers around the Dayton airport. The McDonald Farm in Sale Creek, which had thousands back in December, now has ~30. Numbers may pick up again in February and March as birds head back north.
