[TN-Bird] Elizabethton spring count

The 61st consecutive Elizabethton Spring Bird Count was held on 24 April
by members & friends of the Herndon Chapter of TOS.   Twenty-seven
birders in six parties observed 151 species.  This is slightly above the
recent average of 144 species recorded over the last twenty years and
just the sixth time we have broken the 150 mark.  (The all-time high is
157 species in 1992.)  The coverage area was Carter County plus parts of
adjacent Washington, Unicoi, Sullivan, & Johnson counties.

Highlights included:
Dbl.-cr. Cormorant (136)
Yellow-cr. Night-Heron (4)
Hooded (1) & Red-br. (30) Mergansers
Red-shouldered Hawk (1 - rare in northeast TN)
Ruffed Grouse (7)
Sora (1)
Bonaparte's Gull (36)
Caspian Tern (4)
Barn Owl (1)
Red-headed Woodpecker (3)
Willow (1) & Least (4) Flycatchers
Loggerhead Shrike (3, including 2 at a nest)
Warbling Vireo (4)
Com. Raven (14 - seen by all 6 parties!)
Horned Lark (1)
Brown Creeper (4)
Red-br. Nuthatch (6)
Golden-cr. Kinglet (8)
Hermit Thrush (1)
Am. Pipit (4)
Prothonotary Warbler (1)
Swainson's Warbler (3)
Grasshopper Sparrow (7)
Vesper Sparrow (3)
Red Crossbill (1)
Purple Finch (14)
Pine Siskin (10)

27 species of warblers were seen.  Good numbers of most breeding
warblers were found (e.g., Ovenbird - 157, Black-thr. Green - 156,
Hooded - 154, & Black-thr. Blue - 95).  However, few purely transient
warblers could be found (e.g., Tennessee - 1, Cape May - 1, &
Blackpoll - 1), with some missed completely (Blue-winged, Nashville,
Magnolia, Cerulean, plus Northern Waterthrush).

Other notable misses included Bobwhite, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, E.
Wood-Pewee, Winter Wren, & Veery.
