The 62nd consecutive Elizabethton spring bird count was conducted on 30
April by the Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter of TOS. The count area covered
Carter, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, & Washington counties. 22 observers
in 6 parties spent 74 party hours, plus 6 nocturnal hours.

A cold front moved through during the night before, evidently causing a
notable fallout of migrants. The total of 161 species set a new high
for this count. The previous high was 157 species set in 1992.

The number of Solitary Sandpipers (121) shattered the previous high (82)
for that species. The totals for Wild Turkey, Tree Swallow, Palm
Warbler, & Swainsons Warbler established new highs, also.

Notable finds:
N. Shoveler - 1
Red-br. Merganser - 13
Am. Bittern - 1 (first since 1993)
both night-herons
Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 (scarce in NE Tenn.)
Sora - 4
Short-billed Dowitcher - 1
Caspian Tern - 6
Com. Tern - 2
Barn Owl - 1
N. Saw-whet Owl - 1
Warbling Vireo - 1
Marsh Wren - 1
29 species of warblers

Pine Siskin - 21

Notable misses: N. Bobwhite & E. Wood-Pewee.
