The 63rd annual Elizabethton Spring Bird Count was held on Saturday, 29 April 2006, by members and friends of the Lee & Lois Herndon chapter of TOS. Twenty-nine observers in 6 parties covered Carter County and parts of adjacent Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, & Washington counties. A total of 145 species were found, which is right on the average of the previous twenty years (144.9). Temperature: 40-73. Sky: clear to partly cloudy. Wind: 5-20+ mph. The wind was disruptive at times, particularly at high elevations. Observers were out between 4:30 am - 9:45 pm, accumulating 75 party hours plus 9 nocturnal hours. Highlights: Green-wg. Teal (late), Peregrine Falcon, Virginia Rail, Caspian & Forster's terns, Barn Owl, N. Saw-whet Owl, Red-headed Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Philadelphia Vireo, 27 species of warblers (including Golden-wg., Nashville, Bay-breasted, Prothonotary, Swainson's, Northern Waterthrush & Canada), Bobolink, Purple Finch, & Pine Siskin. Notable misses: Bufflehead, N. Bobwhite, Yellow-cr. Night-Heron, E. Wood-Pewee, Loggerhead Shrike, Swainson's Thrush, Hermit Thrush, several purely transient warbler species (i.e., Blue-winged, Tennessee, Magnolia, Cape May, Blackpoll & Cerulean), Summer Tanager & Grasshopper Sparrow.
