The 51st Supplement to the AOU Check-list is out and several big
changes have been made. AOU has started publishing notice of
the changes being considered on their website so these were known
to be under consideration. A few noteworthy changes which affect
TN species based on a quick look over the supplement (which is in
the July issue of The Auk, incidentally).

American Scoter has been split from Black Scoter of Europe

Greater Shearwater is now Great Shearwater (one record in TN after
Katrina)

Accipiters now have their own order Accipitriformes

Frigatebirds, boobies, and cormorants (and Anhinga presumedly)
have a new order Suliformes

Whip-poor-will has been split into:
Eastern Whip-poor-will (which we have here in TN)
Mexican Whip-poor-will (CA, AZ, NM, TX, and Mexico)

Troglodytes troglodytes is split into 3 species:
Wren (in Europe and Asia)
Winter Wren (which we have here in TN)
Pacific Wren (Breeds: AK, BC, CA, OR, ID, UT, MT, AB and possibly
AZ, NM, CO winters: CA, AZ, NM)

Lots of genus changes in the wood-warblers and sparrows

Blue-winged Warbler is now Vermivora cyanoptera

Tennessee, Orange-crowned, Nashville, Virginia's, Colima, Lucy's,
Flame-throated, and Crescent-chested are all now in the genus
Oreothlypis (mmm, pass the milk)

Northern and Louisiana Waterthrush are now in genus Parkesia

Bachman's Sparrow is now Peucaea aestivalis

Longspurs and Snow and McKay's Buntings are now in a separate
family Calcariidae

McCown's Longspur is now Rhynchophanes mccownii

Further afield:

'Elepaio has been split into 3 species (given below without the
' which is actually a consonant in the Hawaiian language):
Kauai Elepaio
Oahu Elepaio
Hawaii Elepaio

additional scientific name changes for several sparrows, the
brown towhees (CA, Canyon, Albert's, etc)

May be some other changes buried in there as well.
