Hi Claire,

Here in the UK I use “Open Book” from Freedom Scientific, it does it all and
it’s fully accessible with a screen reader, the cost here is 52 pounds UK.
I use it with the HP3500 series all in 1 printer/scanner/copier i use it a
lot, an find it works great.

Kind regards,

Marion

Thanks well I guess the OCR doesn't have to be accessible if we do it from
home, it's a shame that more aren't.

I think you pretty much have it covered. yes there are low cost versions of
OCR software out there, but they are not generally design for the vision
impaired, therefore accessibility may or may not be an issue. One cheap
package that used to work well was Omni page pro, but after about version 9
accessibility became an issue, this package sold for about $100.
Microsoft office does have an ocr package, but how well it works I am not
sure of, have never tinkered with it to see how accessible it really is.
Kirtzweil is going to work well, but it is pricey topping in about $1000, but
if you own it already, it may not be that costly to upgrade, it is about $150
for each version out of date then the current.
K100 is going to allow you to pull ocr out of pdf files that are not in text
formats as well as from jpg images.
As for the scanner, Epsons work well and some Cannons.
If you want something truly portable, the Intel reader sold by Humanware is a
good option. Again not a cheap machine at $1700 for the machine another $400
for the capture station stand for capturing large portions of text. But the
Intel reader is small and can go anywhere and run off its rechargeable battery.

We haven't shopped for this in awhile. We have an older scanner that does one
page at a time and no new OCR software.
We need to convert study materials.
I would imagine the easiest thing would be to have a multi sheet scanner and
prepare it at home. Not sure if many of those come with OCR software.
I have seen some portable scanners as well that have OCR.
Can for now use the scanner we have and get some OCR software but ideally I
think a multi feed with OCR software that comes with it sounds best.
Just looking for recommendations on the best set up and scanners and/or
software recommended. Trying to also be economical.

  Thanks Claire
