Loss Control Solutions (LCS), a provider of the financial industry's most widely used investigative case management system, is trimming the fat (as in "fat clients") by providing its customers with a browser-based version of its Investigation Case Management System (ICMS)(TM). Since first introducing the technology to its customer and prospect base in 2002, 20 percent have converted or began using the browser-based version of ICMS. Used in conjunction with a Citrix server, the ICMS browser-based software affords customers all of the benefits of a "thin client" environment, including better connectivity and improved efficiency of the application's operation. "With a Citrix server, you're only sending mouse movements and keystrokes over the network; therefore, you've minimized the impact on the workstation and you've maximized the speed of the application," said Bryan Viau, president of LCS. "The browser-based version of ICMS looks, feels and functions just like an intranet package, but allows you to take any software application you already have - such as ICMS - and put it on a Citrix server, eliminating the fat client situation without having to reinvest in the original software." Cleveland-based KeyCorp currently uses the fat client application of ICMS, but will migrate to the browser-based ICMS version this spring. "The fat client application of ICMS offers the capability for the investigator to work offline and update case information to the server at a later time," said Maureen J. Brown, vice president and Northeast Region Security Manager, KeyBank Corporate Security. "We encountered internal network communication issues that did not allow the ICMS application to run at optimum efficiency. After extensive internal research, we decided the Citrix/browser-based solution would best fit our needs and our budget. We traded off the ability to work offline to enhance the system speed." In addition to increased speed and better connectivity, the browser-based system also affords companies and their employees easier access to upgrades and maintenance requests. "In the fat client environment, each PC required an on-site technical support visit for upgrades and maintenance," said Brown. "In the Citrix/browser-based environment, upgrades and maintenance are applied only to the server." According to Viau, much of the inspiration behind the creation of the browser-based system can be attributed to the fleeting shelf life of today's technology and LCS' desire to satisfy the needs of its customers. "With this browser-based product, we've proven we can keep current with technology," Viau said. "What our customers wanted was an easier way to do rollouts and upgrades, thereby improving connectivity to their existing applications. What LCS did was apply new technology to satisfy that need without our customers having to make major reinvestments - of any kind."
