Hi Jon, The quick answer is that it depends on the application mix you're using. Something like the Macromedia (sorry, Adobe) suite absolutely hammers appdata so it generates a heck of a lot of network activity when appdata is redirected. That's a pretty good reason not to redirect appdata because it's gurateed to slow everything down. On the other hand you can have an application that puts so much stuff into appdata that not redirecting the folder will majorly slow down logins. The cruel part is that most of the stuff in appdata is static and is just there because it's easier to keep everything together. One reasonable compromise is flex profiles (with local profile source). You don't redirect appdata but can handle selected user-specific files with flex. The static stuff never hits the network and you get the best of both worlds. In the case of applications that put important config/etc files into local settings\appdata, aside from wanting to shoot the developers, something like the flex approach is probably the only way to keep the files without carrying around a lot of extra fat. I've thought that something like AIE might be useful to let you do app-specific redirection to a local or network appdata folder, but to be honest that's speculation only, haven't had a chance to try it. regards, Rick Ulrich Mack Volante Systems ________________________________ From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx on behalf of Luchette, Jon Sent: Thu 17/08/2006 22:30 To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] redirecting appdata Hello, What is the consensus out there on redirecting the appdata folder? I know in the past there have been discussions on this list and people have said generally that "it will decrease performance." Is this a 100% definite No-No for performance reasons, or is anyone out there doing it and having good results? I just want to find out more about why or why not... Thanks. _______________________________________________ Jon Luchette Emerson Hospital Technology Specialist III Work: 978-287-3369 Cell: 978-360-1379 jluchette@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx _______________________________________________ ##################################################################################### This e-mail, including all attachments, may be confidential or privileged.
