Hi Andrew,

Anyone who wants to run kernel mode printer drivers on Windows server 2003 is
missing out on a great opportunity to finally get rid of potentially dangerous
printer drivers.

You CAN run kernel mode drivers on 2003, but you're far better off accepting
the default, and maybe looking at how the drivers are set up. A lot of software
developers using specialised printer drivers have been incredibly lazy about
updating their kernel mode drivers. Even Adobe only got rid of their kernel
mode drivers last year (Acrobat 6.0) last year, 4 years after 2000 was released.

Of course accounting software like Pegasus often uses back-end engines from the
dark ages so it's not really all that surprising. And approaching your
suppliers and telling them you want a win2k/XP version, not NT 4 compatible
doesn't generally help 'cause they only know accounting.

Most PDF converters use a plain ordinary postscript driver. If it's a kernel
mode driver, it can be replaced with a version-3 equivalent and the converter
will most times still work. If you don't know where to start, email me.

regards,

Rick

Is anyone running this on 2003 at all?!

It seems to want to load a kernel mode print driver to make its PDF's
(it shows as v2 driver in print server properties and the program
crashes with a "cant load printer driver" error!), but the Disallow
Kernel Mode Drivers policy option seems to have no effect on it :(
