Another benefit to Chris' recommendation of having a
separate SMTP server is that a SMTP gateway is a much
better place for filtering and virus-scanning the
inbound email. Most filtering and antivirus software
written for Exchange 5.5 only scans the inbound
message *after* it's already been written to the
drive.
