Or a better way of putting it is: if you are willing to install 2005.04, then
why not enable the new features of PS4 if
you have the license and it's the same code? When deploying FR3, was it
customary to install SP3 to all servers in the
farm before switching the servers to use an FR3 license?

Yeah, but there is no difference between 2005.04 and PS4. They are the same
except that PS4 has the features enabled
while 2005.04 does not. You would essentially be installing the same code base.
If a customer is unwilling to upgrade
their entire farm to PS4, then why would they be willing to upgrade to 2005.04
since it is the same code?

Perhaps for a small farm, but medium and large farms it is much more difficult
to get approvals upgrade the whole
farm(Departments, Analysts, Vendors, and the customer themselves). It can take
anywhere from 3-12 months to get
everything tested and upgraded.

A Service Pack is a much easier sell. Here is what the Admin Guide has to say
about SP 2005.04:

Apply Service Pack 2005.04 to MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0. Select this
option

to apply all service packs for MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0. This option
does

not update your server to the feature set for MetaFrame Presentation Server 4.0.

This option fixes only problems solved since the last full release of MetaFrame

Presentation Server 3.0.

I just confirmed from Citrix support that this is supposed to say 2005.04, not
Service Pack 4. The updated version of
the file will be posted eventually.

Note that this is a recommendation, not a requirement. However, if your
subscription advantage expiration date is past
4/27, I don't see any point to installing 2005.04 instead of installing PS 4.0
since they are essentially the same thing
and you are already licensed for PS 4.0.

MetaFrame Service Pack 4 Required on Servers running MetaFrame Presentation
Server 3.0

Citrix does not recommend mixing servers running MetaFrame Presentation Server
3.0 and 4.0 in the same farm. However, if
you must install MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 and 4.0 on servers in a
single farm, make sure you update your
servers running MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 to Service Pack 4. [#109701]

Found this note....

NOTE: This image also includes Service Pack 2005.04 for MetaFrame Presentation
Server 3.0
??

Is this the required piece we have never heard of for MPS 3.0 upgrade to 4.0?
