Forbidden, Allowed, or Obligated?
Moshe posted a *halachic* opinion that Jews who have left our religion
(or have never found it) should not be brought in to put on tefillin.
Especially not if they have joined another religion. The rabbi who wrote
the article seems well-learned and tried to be objective.
Regarding putting tefillin on a Jew who has openly taken on another
religion, his conclusion is clear: “It seems that even from a Torah
perspective we should treat him as a goy for all matters. This author also
checked with Rav Dovid Harfenes, one of the leading *Poskim* in New York
and he responded, “*Chas v’Shalom*.” [Heaven forbid]
Thank G-d, I have been putting tefillin on Jews at the Kotel for 36
years. It has at times been hard work, mostly a joy, and always a
privilege. A surprising number have come back to me, even many years later,
and have said such things as, “You won’t remember me but 20 years ago you
put tefillin on me and showed me how to pray for my family. I want you to
know that I have been doing it every day since.”
Now, what’s the question? Should we require a Jew to repent before we
help him with tefillin or the other mitzvahs? The major rabbis I ask such
questions to say that we are obligated to help if we can.
From time to time, rabbis of a certain large segment of Torah
observant Jews come up to me when I am putting tefillin on someone and
derisively ask such things as; “How do you know that he’s a Jew? Did he
wash before you put tefillin on him?”

We do not keep the sick people out of the hospital.
