Every spring, since I moved to my current location in s Greetings All: Every spring, since I moved to my current location in summer of 2004, I have driven the stretch of Quaker Avenue between 34th Street and 4th street almost daily. Every spring (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) I have had my first Western Kingbirds, along this route somewhere between 27 March and 2 April. I have yet to see a single kingbird along this route this year and, as I seek them with increasing ferocity, I don't think that it is for lack of effort. This was bolstered by my trip to Throckmorton County yesterday. Generally, by this time of year I would have had multiple Western Kingbirds and Scissor-tailed Flycatchers atop the Caprock Escarpment along the route I took (Lubbock to Post to points eastward ... and back). Yesterday I had not a single Western Kingbird or Scissor-tailed Flycatcher above the escarpment. Western Kingbirds, to tell the truth were not all that common below the escarpment - I saw but three in Garza County. Scissor-tailed Flycatchers, on the other hand, were everywhere below the escarpment with lots of sightings from Garza County all the way to Throckmorton County. I am hoping that the kingbirds are merely a bit late this year (I know others in my area have had some sightings) but they are sorely missed, at this point, on my daily drives to work a TEXBIRDS help file and Texas birding links at: http://moonmountaingroup.com/texbirds nd back.
