I found a Pacific Loon with 2 Common Loons off the swim beach at Canyon Park on
Canyon Lake, Comal County this morning. The loons were too far out for
photographs, but fortunately, the Pacific Loon and 1 of the Common Loons spent
a lot of top preening and resting on the water, allowing extended observation
through a scope.
Description: The Pacific Loon appeared about 3/4 the size of the Common Loons,
but slimmer, with a thinner neck and a smaller, more smoothly rounded head,
lacking the pronounced angle on the forehead that the Common Loons displayed.
The crown and nape of the Pacific Loon frequently appeared to be frosted gray
and were consistently lighter in tone than the back. The demarcation between
the white throat and the darker neck was sharp and straight, without the
alternating light and dark "half collars" of the Common Loons.
