Did Sayers, Old Sayers and Arbuckle roads this morning for about 4 as my last fling of the spring here. Arrived as the Chuck-wills were still going...Man is this a good year for those. Highlights: 1 Singing Wood Thrush, ..Never seen A Broad-winged Hawk that flew directly in to the dense top of a huge pecan....Hmm. 1 Singing Kentucky Warbler...Also not seen 2 Juv. Barred Owls ...Old Sayers at the low water crossing. Red-eyed and a few Yellow-throat Vireos, oddles of Summer Tanagers, 8 Pileated Wood. At the cattle pens and nearby on Sayers there were likely 160-180 Purple Martins on the wires and when I looked thru them most were juv.s....Man how can they already be fledged here? Not only that but they seemed to almost be in a post breeding flock....A friend allows that she had already seen a gathering in S. Austin recently....Surely it can't be that they are already piling up to move elsewhere for the summer...Or? -- Brush Freeman 361-655-7641 http://texasnaturenotes.blogspot.com/ Finca de los Alacranes., Utley,Texas
