I'm pretty sure the unit SHOULD turn on in tv mode, otherwise it would
interrupt what you are watching. That does not mean it is not recording the
proper channel.

This Toshiba VCR M-684C will record manually, no problem. The problem is
with pre-programmed recording. It doesn't matter what channel I set the
unit to record from when the timer turns on the machine, the unit always
comes on in TV mode (as in TV/VCR choice) instead of VCR mode, and
thereby doesn't record what is wanted.
Is there a specific known fix for this? I don't want to spend much time
on it. Already removed circuit board and soldered power supply and
checked ESR of caps.
If there is no known fix, would it be possible to force the VCR to turn
on in VCR mode rather than TV mode? I could add a toggle switch on the
front panel to engage or disengage this. I'm thinking of one of the pins
on the tuner might go high or low when TV/VCR button is pressed. If I
add a switch with a pull-up resistor maybe that would work. I'd rather
have the proper fix if anyone knows it and it doesn't invlove replacing
the microprocessor IC.
