I think you have ruled out the front tactile switches, since if they 
were leaking or stuck "on" they would swamp out the micro not allowing 
the OSD to show vol decreasing. Wonder if this is a micro issue?  Would 
be nice to know which pin is the volume, and see if this is changing... 
Do you have the manual?
