I used to repair Chrondek timers for New England Dragway. They had display
tubes that read out numbers. They were an odd (compared to radio & TV)
configuration, but I don't remember how many pins they had.
The early versions were about the size of a 6SN7 and had a series of dots
arranged in a circle at the top of the tube to line up with a number (0 to
9) painted on the case. The later ones read out actual numbers by having
internal grid wires shaped as a number, and were more the size of a 9 pin
miniature tube. Those read out from the side of the envelope. Of course both
they had to have more than 9 pins and probably would have had 11. They lit
up like a neon lamp. Had to have a wire grid for each one of the digits 0 to
9 plus the other pole to conduct to. That would add up to 11 pins.

Those were in use in 1968 and stayed until a new computerized system was
developed in the 80s, based on the 386 chips. One of the engineers who
worked for Chrondek, did a project on the design of a system with a direct
speed read out at about that time (68), for his masters thesis. The system
in use at the time simply read the elapsed time for a car passing through a
pair of beams 132 feet apart, that were situated 66 feet before and 66 feet
after the finish line. The timer operator then had to look up the reading on
a conversion chart to write the speed on the timing slip for the driver.
