Phil,

We keep it simple. We charge $4 materials and supplies on every repair
except warranty work and initial service calls to estimate a job or when an
estimate is declined. That means that we charge tax on everything except
those cases. That $4 goes to routine shop expenses like cleaners, solder,
wick, and the DSL line. If we use an unusually large amount of cleaner,
like washing a board it gets billed as a discrete item.

I know, but this is regarding a state sales tax issue. If a 1 lb roll of
60/40 solder the usual diameter for our work costs between 7-9 dollars I
want to know how mush per foot it costs. A local shop got audited for
sales tax. Fla law is if the invoice is pure labor, no tax charged
(assumong you use no materials like parts, etc) I guess like an
adjustment or a home trip charge. If there is say a fuse ($1.00) and
100.00 labor we must charge tax on $101.00.
There is a dispute between interpretations. There is also a clause that
says any item under a nickel is no tax. Well, resolder board, restore
sound. One inch solder used. I dunno, .01 cents? And a shot of cleaner
spray?
Now you know what I'm getting at. Aparently this certain auditor really
gave that shop a hard time. he owes thousands now from her going back
over cust. invouces and disallowing no tax on many. I don't think it's
fair, but with the government, it's what they say. It burns me that
Florida is picking on SMALL ONE MAN OPERATIONS HERE AT GROUND ZERO FOR
THREE HURRICANES THAT DEVISTATED OUR ECONOMY AND WE ARE HOLDING ON BY
OUR NAILS,NOW THIS. This is really an honest shop owner. He keeps good
records.Maybe that was the ammunition that got him.
Sorry for shouting. Just venting.
Phil
