Mark, I understand that I do not need continuous access to the server while running Inventor but it much easier to keep the overall CAD model current if we can download and upload before and after our design sessions from home instead of waiting until we come back into the site. Many of us do not make it there every day. I'm perfectly happy to get the vault up and running. I'm familiar with using VPN but where do I get the VPN client so I can VPN into the servers? Also, here are the PDFs that talks about vault, it seems clear that you do not need access to the server at all times, just to check out the code and commit your changes. You are free to work without an internet connection or access to the server while you are making the changes. http://images.autodesk.com/adsk/files/vault_family_detail_brochure_us.pdf http://images.autodesk.com/adsk/files/vaultfamily11_top10_us.pdf On Sun, Jan 30, 2011 at 12:37 PM, Mark Amber <balloooza314@xxxxxxxxx<mailto:balloooza314@xxxxxxxxx>> wrote: Matt: From what I read about the Vault, you can use it off site, then sync your changes back up, and also the Microsoft Dreamspark is just a licencing program from Microsoft to give students (including those of FIRST) access to Microsoft Products at no additional cost (in hopes that you will purchase them later in life) So the way it would work would be I install Windows Server 2008 R2, a system that it runs on just fine, and make that the Vault server, and that 2008 R2 server would be acquired through Microsoft's Dreamspark licenceing program I will look more into the vault, and you do not have to use it once it is installed either Adam: Crosstheroad does sell the cables: X2 10 inch X2 24 inch http://crosstheroadelectronics.com/Cable.html On Sun, Jan 30, 2011 at 11:37 AM, <octaneadam@xxxxxxxxx<mailto:octaneadam@xxxxxxxxx>> wrote: Mark, crlsstheroadelectronics doesn't appear to sell CAN cables. I found the location of the router and with the help of murray, moved the bridge to receive internet. Another thing you should know is that I receive a weekly report, or on-demand reports from the gateway, and it came to my attention that some things were being downloaded that could wait for later. Among the things that disturbed me was around 300MB over peer to peer networks, and 54 MB from Pandora. The internet speeds at the build site are not very fast, so it would be much appreciated if you save your downloading for home (I know that it is easy to forget since it runs in the background while seeding) and also if you want to listen to music it would be nice if you refrain from using streaming services, and revert to saved music or FM radio. The reason I ask is because of two things: 1) It is just nice to be able to access the internet fast, and since our speeds are only 140 k-bytes/sec we are not in a position to be doing recreational downloading, because it compromises what others can do. 2) If I find that this is a continuing disturbance, I can restrict access to these services by using bandwidth control (something that is active right now, just not being enforced with the "penalty box", a place you stay for 1 hour after violating a bandwidth rule) But I think that we are better than that and this email will be good enough to resolve these issues. Second, CAD Once we have the Microsoft Dreamspark codes, I will be able to install Windows server 2008 R2 on the VM server, then we will have access to the CAD "Vault". From what I have read this will be a fantastic addition to the CAD software, it seems that it includes version control, much like what we are using for the code, so you can track changes to the models you make in the cad, then work on it at home, take it back to robotics, then merge it with other peoples models, so no more silly file transfers. Third, Files On that CAD server VM, I will enable file sharing, so you will be able to keep other misc files on the server at robotics, when it starts working, just direct your Windows to First2039 server (you should see it on your file browser), but again, this is all once we get the Microsoft Dreamspark keys Fourth, Programming Once we get those keys, I will do a second installation of Windows Server, this time 2003, with Terminal Server enabled. I will add a user directory based on anyone on the team roster, so you will have a username (most likely your name and last initial) and when you log on to this server with that weird remote desktop viewer thin in your accessories menu you will have a complete programming environment. The best part about all of this is that I can set it all up at home since we are using the VM server, so one day you will come in and it will all just be working. Finally If any of you are interested in using Ubuntu, I have an Ubuntu 10.10 VM up already, just ask me and I will give you some login information to try it out. -- >>Mark Amber<< -- >>Mark Amber<< -- >>Mark Amber<<
