Peter, We've been discussing with our IT section of using digital pen and paper, so that all inspection forms, log books, et al, are digitally reproduced back in the office almost immediately. In providing these, they also provide a bar code reader in the pen and it is our intention to use the bar codes on the controller parts to update the build list of each site as it is maintained. (There is also a suspected issue of parts being stolen or swapped for faulty parts by others unknown, thus our maintenance contractor has already started recording serial numbers manually for their own records). The Red Corner have already helpfully provided me with their bar code design, so that we can somehow work out a way of automatically updating the database. If so, do you use such a system for general parts.. assuming you carry out any first line maintenance. I would like to implement a bar code stock and inventory system for signals, pay & display maintenance and traffic counters... yes, we do those also! Can you recommend any particular system?
