the squirrel cage fan on the end of the crank.....do any of you know if the fan
can be removed without pulling the engine?  can it be done by just removing the
surrounding sheet metal?
I put my 914 motor in my 72 bus.  I kept the fan housing from the bus but the
fan/pulley was the one on the 914. I've been hearing a muffled knocking noise
and after a compression test that didn't show any problems, I ran the motor a
while to listen again.  I took off the timing track and could see where the fan
is rubbing the housing when I rotated the motor.  hopefully thats the muffled
knocking i'm hearing.
so, I want to change the fan out but the bus is miles away and i can't go out
to the garage to see if the exchange is possible without pulling the motor.
thanks,shirley
