By coincidence the Sept issue of Popular Mechanics has an article titled "What's on Your Shelf." They interviewed Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage of "Mythbusters" fame about stuff they keep on their shelf for "special" automotive situations. The product they recommended for seized bolts was "Kroil" by Kano Labs. Their method from the article: "...it will penetrate into and loosen up stuff you'd otherwise have to torch apart. Spray the fasteners with Kroil daily for a week or two. Whack the part with a ball-peen hammer everyday to set up some high-frequency vibrations to pulverize the rust inside the joint. This stuff penetrates stuck parts better than anything I've ever used, which makes the trip to the industrial supply house worth it." http://www.kanolabs.com/google/ I've never heard of Kroil (which isn't significant in my case) and it sounds a little out there to me and almost like a "muffler bearing" or "hubcap gasket" joke you'd pull on a newbie. Not sure I'd wait 2 weeks, either. They mention other products they use - Marvel Mystery Oil, Loctite, Never-Seez, etc. and their application explanations make sense. I like Tim Allen's - I mean Sammie's - approach. "Impact wrench with high PSI." - aka "More Power!" Good luck! ________________________________ From: Brian Denning <i_am_cool_fred@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, August 21, 2009 8:55:39 PM Subject: [tcb] rust rust rust and stuck bolts started pulling the split case transmission out of fred today. got a question for you guys any tips or tricks on betting rusted stuck bolts out???? mainly the ones in the rgb's, they are stuck refusing to come out, even with an impact, what can i do to get them out? i coated them with pb blast, is that about it???? any other tips or tricks? ________________________________ Hotmail® is up to 70% faster.
