Sammie I put a big nut trans into my 56 panel , all it required extra was the adapter I bought from ??? I forget . It changes the front mount bolts . Adapter can be built but not worth the worry to me . Also, Alan's comment had something I sometimes use but didn't think about; give them a few good whacks on the head with a substantial hammer, this sometimes jars rust loose and helps the penetrating oil. Have never put the tunnel case into split case frame on a bus. Samba has a good thread on this I think. Have done it in a Type I and it is a simple bolt in when using the solid mount. As to the coupler; as far as I know the Type IIs are all the same; they use the round type as in the earlier beetles. -- On Sat, 8/22/09, Brian Denning <i_am_cool_fred@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: From: Brian Denning <i_am_cool_fred@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [tcb] Re: rust rust rust and stuck bolts To: tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Saturday, August 22, 2009, 7:00 AM sammie, yes, it's the ones that hold the boxes to the springplates. guess maybe i should borrow the F-I-L's compressor, perhaps mine just doesn't produce enough=2 0psi??? i'm using an impact, that's the only thing i can think of that would be causing problems per your recommendations, i soaked them in pb blaster last night, and will all weekend till next week and try it again, these bolts are the only thing keeping that transmission in my bus. and i get my big nut today. speaking of big nut, the shift coupler on the 58 was really really weird looking, is there a different shift coupler on early splits than there is on beetles and bays???? or is the little red coupler i'm thinking about a universal job that will replace the original round funky looking one that is on my 58? and, for any of you that might of done this conversion (split case out big nut tunnel trans in) is there anythinge else, besides grinding of the nose cone ribs, adapter plate, and coupler that i need to watch out for??? They interviewed Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage of "Mythbusters" fame about stuff they keep on their shelf for "special" automotive situations. The product they recommended for seized bolts was "Kroil" by Kano Labs. Their method from the article: "...it will penetrate into and loosen up stuff you'd otherwise have to torch apart. Spray the fasteners with Kroil daily for a week or two. Whack=2 0the part with a ball-peen hammer everyday to set up some high-frequency vibrations to pulverize the rust inside the joint. This stuff penetrates stuck parts better than anything I've ever used, which makes the trip to the industrial supply house worth it." http://www.kanolabs.com/google/ I've never heard of Kroil (which isn't significant in my case) and it sounds a little out there to me and almost like a "muffler bearing" or "hubcap gasket" joke you'd pull on a newbie. Not sure I'd wait 2 weeks, either. They mention other products they use - Marvel Mystery Oil, Loctite, Never-Seez, etc. and their application explanations make sense. I like Tim Allen's - I mean Sammie's - approach. "Impact wrench with high PSI." - aka "More Power!" Good luck!
