I could tell a long story on that but it is not Friday.

I believe VW ran the main power wire thru the headlight switch before
everything so that when everything else went wrong you could still be sitting
on the side of the road with the lights on so you wouldn't get run over.

 Just my opinion.

I would think that if you are going to have to trouble shoot your wiring some
time in the future it might be better to stay reasonably close to the original
wiring diagram. If you are going to make your own drawing it won't matter. As I
am making some temp repairs to get me home I seem to forgetwhere everything
hooks up.Unless you are some kind of electrical genius with a very good memory
stay with the original wiring. It's only been working for 30 plus years.
Maybe Gunter really wasn't that dimwitted. The wiring still works with a
little help from all of us smart guys.

So Gerald, do you route power from the starter to the ignition switch, then on
to your fuse panel, then back to bottom, right hand side terminal 30 on the
switch (where the hot wire originally hooked to)?

It looks like I don't need to hook up the other two 30 terminals with this
set-up.

I am at this very spot on my single cab and that was my plan not to route the
entire electrical system through the headlight switch, but to go to a mini GM
blade fuse box, then back to the headlight switch.
