Will, thanks for the advice. I am only less helpless - not ready to
totally go it alone, so I'm bringing it to a mechanic, he'll do this
disassembling, I'll watch and learn and clean and paint and order
parts and then he'll reassemble and I'll watch and learn so more.
Someday I'll be independent, just not yet.

Powder coating will require a complete disassembly and cleaning of
everything. POR-15 works but also Eastwood Chassis Black for these
parts. A steel wire brush, some soap/water and you're prepped. There's
also some metal prep products that POR-15 recommends but you'll be money
ahead than powder coating.
While you have it out, change all of the seals and check the king and
link pin assemblies for wear. Have the spindles rebuilt if necessary.
Those bearings that the link pins ride in are also subject to a lot of
wear. Some busses I've torn into have had no needle bearings in the
cage that surrounds a link pin.
