I would love to stay local with parts purchasing. Since I am a local business
I firmly believe in staying local, but quality has been an issue.

I will not name any names but, the unfortunate reality for me (locally) has
been that the expense is higher and they still charge me shipping on top of it.
I have also found that they are less likely to give me correct parts. Since
my experience is limited if I go in and ask for a front seal for a 67 and they
give me a seal for a bay I cannot visually recognize the difference. I have
had better luck for less money ordering. It also saves me a trip to the shop.

Sammie, thanks for the input maybe I'll try another shop like Black Gold.

Thanks,

Jeff

Not knocking where anyone gets their parts; but I have found that on common
items, such as brake shoes and cylinders, your local VW parts supplier is
cheaper than places like O'Riley's and Autozone. Just did 2 front brake jobs
on splitties and the cylinders were like $20 each from my local friendly VW
parts supplier. Just bought a set of Bosch plug wires from Jack Wenk at Black
Gold and they were a third cheaper than Autozone for the exact same plug wire
set. You have three local suppliers: Austin VW, Kenny Hill and Motormania.
Check em out before you order from someone else. Or give someone like Jack
Wenk at Black Gold in Arlington a call. There are lots of others in Tx that
can UPS in a couple of days.

last late bus brake job (I'm doing this from memory from about a year ago)
less that $50 bucks for shoes
  Rear Wheel Cylinders $30/each (X 2)
  Front Wheel Cylinders $35/each ( X 4)
  Hardware Kits are about $20
  That gets you started.

        Thanks for everyones input.

I didn't really want to turn the drums but I have always needed to turn or
replace in the past. I was just going to replace them, but WW is out of stock.
So I'll check the wear pattern and hopefully I won't find any grooves.

Does around $300 in parts sound right?

I am inclined to agree with Sammie, I don't like turning drums if you don't
have to. You have a limited amount of adjustment and increasing the diameter of
the drum just makes it that much harder to get the brakes adjusted properly.

  Just my .02

This will probably open up a can of worms on the site, but on a VW I do not
turn the drums unless absolutely necessary. Especially on a bug but even on a
bus these drums do not have much metal when new and the more you take off when
turning the weaker you make them, read warped drums the first time you cram on
the brakes hard. If they are really gouged out and worn then you don't have
much choice, either turn them or buy new ones. But, be careful in turning them
or you will wind up with warped drums.

I am going to redo my brake system in prep for my next road trip.

I plan to replace the pads, springs, lines and get the drums turned, etc......
I have done several brake jobs before but this will be my first on a splittie.

The last time I had my front hubs off I noticed a leak and I am hoping this
leak is the cause of lost pressure in the lines I am currently experiencing.
It is a 67 with a one year only master cylinder that I am hoping will not need
to be replaced.

I plan to get these parts from WW, any suggestions or pit falls in a splittie
break job are appreciated.
