Well thanks for the help everybody. Time to change the oil. --- On Fri, 1/14/11, Bill Gmail <bbauer2000@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: From: Bill Gmail <bbauer2000@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: [tcb] Re: A Lil Mechanical Advice For a Newbie? I also agree that synthetic oil in that motor would not be my first choice. You know the saying about opinions. But, on the early VW engines, 1600, 1500, 1200 etc. over filling with oil was a killer for the mainseal. Run em with too much oil and you are just about guaranteed of blowing the main seal and creating a leak. Also, you mentioned synthetic. Don't want to start the old synthetic vs. real oil argument, but most of the knowledgeable aircooled VW gurus that I know advise against the use of synthetic oil in the aircooled engine. --- On Fri, 1/14/11, kelly dosch <kellydosch@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: From: kelly dosch <kellydosch@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: [tcb] Re: A Lil Mechanical Advice For a Newbie? Aircooled or liquid cooled. --- On Fri, 1/14/11, kelly dosch <kellydosch@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: From: kelly dosch <kellydosch@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: [tcb] Re: A Lil Mechanical Advice For a Newbie? To: tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Friday, January 14, 2011, 2:57 AM Well it was flippin freezing that day. And the dealership that put it together filled it with synthetic. That's all I know. I understand and accept the fact that this is the part where I learn to be a VW mechanic. It's just a little daunting at first. Thank you for your help! Another member will have to explain what happened, although I bet it has to do with the viscosity and weight of the oil, the outside temps and the alignment of the moon and stars. Were you wearing your tincap before or after filling it up? I checked my oil and the dipstick was reading just below the two fill lines. That means it needs a quart, right? Like any other car? I had 1/3 of a qt in my garage, so I dumped it in just to get me to a gas station. I checked it again and the level was the same. So I went to the gas station and put 1/2 a qt. in. Checked it. Still no change. I then dumped in the rest of the oil, totaling about 1.33 qt. I then drove about 20 miles and checked it again. Now it reads WAAAYYY over-full! Like 2 inches above the full line! Then I had to drive it home like that. What did I do wrong? And now what sort of mess do I have? Did I hurt it driving it like that?
