How many grains, and are the outsides of the grains inhibited from burning?

It will be much easier to give good advice if you were to describe your
ingredients, geometries, & preparations.

The only advice I can give would be that no, grain spacers are not
generally required for a 2grain 38mm exterior-inhibited BATES.  Just dish
one end of the grain.
